11th of July 2008. Gentlemen, The Race has started again! On 11th of July iPhone 3G was launched. At the same time new version on the firmware - 2.0 was launched as well. We all expected the new firmware and the new bootloader in the new hardware to be locked tightly. But several teams have already report progress. That is good news. Nothing is made public yet, but stay tuned we have some info from internal resources that we don’t have to wait for long...

18th of July 2008. We have been in contact with the member of the dev-team. Dev-team is the most famous team out there working on iPhone. The news is half good and half bad. The good news first. The good news is that dev-team will release a new version of their infamous PwnageTool. The new version number is 2.0 and the release will happen in the beginning of next week. The good part continues: the tools will do all the magic for 1st generation iPhones upgraded to 2.0 firmware. It will jailbreak, activate, enable 3rd party apps with Installer, enable Apple AppStore and also it will unlock the iPhone. That IS really good news!

That is all what 1st generation iPhone owners could wish for. Now the sad part. The magic does not fully expand to the new hardware - iPhone 3G. The news is not completely bad. The new tool will do some magic for iPhone 3G as well. It will jailbreak, activate, enable 3rd party apps with Installer and enable Apple AppStore. Thats it. As you no doubt have noticed the magic will not cover the Holy Grail of iPhone hacking - the unlock for iPhone 3G.

According to our source (member of the dev-team) they have faced some difficulties patching the new baseband of iPhone 3G. Baseband patch of the modem is necessary to be able to use any SIM cards with the phone. But, our source was confident that they will be able to SIM unlock the new iPhone 3G sooner or later. Well, after all, the new hardware has been available only for a week. With the first generation iPhones it took three month before the first true software unlock was released by www.iphonesimfree.com. Today the community has so much more information available about both iPhones. Therefore we all hope that this time it will be a lot faster.

But whatever happens we will keep you posted.

20th of July 2008. The big news is here! iPhone 2.0 IS UNLOCKED. Just a little early of the schedule we reported two day ago Dev-team has just released 2.0 version of their PwnageTool. The tool will jailbreak, activate, enable 3rd party apps with Installer, enable Apple AppStore and also it will unlock the iPhone 2.0 firmware. All that works for on 1st generation iPhone hardware. For iPhone 3G hardware everything else works as well except unlocking. Dev-team hopes to add iPhone 3G unlocking soon. All this functionality is exactly like we forecasted two days ago.

9th of August 2008. iPhone firmware 2.0.1 released and unlocked.

On 4th of August Apple released iPhone firmware 2.0.1. New features include:

1. -Backup process for the iPhone is much faster.
   

2. -Many bug fixes, more stability
   

3. -SMS typing faster
   

Today iPhone DevTeam has released 2.0.2 version of its infamous PwnageTool. The new version of the unlocking tool supports new iPhone firmware 2.0.1. So it took DevTeam less than a week to unlock the new firmware. New features of PwnageTool include:

1. -Support for iPhone firmware 2.0.1
   

2. -Includes Installer.app 4 beta
   

3. -Includes new Cydia
   

4. -Several bugs fixed

24th of December 2008. iPhone 3G is UNLOCKED!

Who could ask for a better gift for Christmas!

Today DevTeam has demoed to us how they can unlock iPhone 3G. Jailbreaking and Activation has been available before, but this is the first in the world, true software based SIM unlock of iPhone 3G. We where lucky to witness live how the magic works. Big thanks to DevTeam member MuscleNerd.

To cut the long story short we can confirm that the new DevTeam unlock works perfectly with iPhone 3G. The name of the new tool is “yellowsn0w”. As of now it is a command line tool only. All you need to do is run it from command prompt. The whole unlocking process takes about 7 seconds and it even does not require you to restart your phone. DevTeam is not talking to much about how this unlock really works, but here is what we know so far:

1. -DevTeam has found a bug in the modem baseband with versions 02.11.07 and earlier. They are successfully exploiting the bug to perform the unlock.
   

2. -If you upgrade your iPhone 3G via iTunes to firmware 2.2 your modem will be upgraded to new baseband 02.28.00. As of now yellowsn0w will not work on that baseband.
   

3. -If your iPhone 3G is today on a 2.1 firmware yellowsn0w will unlock it easily. If you want to upgrade to 2.2 you can do so by using Pwnage Tool so that the modem baseband stays at version 02.11.07. But if you have already upgraded to 2.2 yellowsn0w will not be able to unlock it as of now.
   

Currently the yellowsn0w tool is being packaged into user friendly application. Expect it to be as simple as QuickPwn. DevTeam aims to release it on New Years Eve 2008.

It sure looks like 2009 is gonna be a happy year. Right on time DevTeam has released its new tool “yellowsn0w”. The best news is that after the demo we reported on Christmas Eve the tool has gotten even better.
